Projected computer animations are among the first works of art visitors experience in East Building. Collaborating designers, Lee Cherry and Donnie Wrights, with Associate Professor, Pat FitzGerald from the Advanced Media Lab at the North Carolina State University, College of Design created and developed several different light and sound installations for the NCMA opening.

Above the staircase, the animation series ‘Wheels of Fortune’ displays nature imagery in parallax patterns, alongside synchronous sounds. Farther inside, visitors’ movements trigger light and sound projections onto gallery walls through an invisible interface all the while gazing at a cascading wall of images, typography and poetry in motion. In addition to the interactive events, short film animations created and produced by undergraduate students from the Art & Design program at the NCSU College of Design will be showcased in the exhibit space along the lower entrance level.

Zoom Raleigh is a rich interactive interface that has been installed in the window of the Urban Design Center right on Fayetteville Street. Further refining and developing 3D interfaces for exploring urban spaces. This project is the culmination of that work along with the refinement of large touch-screen interfaces.

Zoom Raleigh is co-sponsored by the Raleigh City Museum, City of Raleigh Planning Department, American Image Graphics, and Empire Properties.

Zoom Raleigh has incorporated multi-media montages, archival materials, historic photos, and interviews with Raleigh leaders like Greg Hatem. The result is a massive interactive screen that sits behind glass that entices passers-by to reach out and play with the interface. Part art, and part technical feat, the work both educates the public and reinforces the technology culture of Raleigh.

Zoom Raleigh as a 3D interactive digital installation allows viewers to interact with digital media related to the history of hte arts, architecture and culture of Raleigh, NC. Featuring an interactive 3D visualization of downtown Raleigh, viewers can manipulate the digital model by rotating the city itself, selecting buildings of interest and interacting with narrated slideshows of historical photographs and text specific to selected sites.

Exploiting experimental touch and hand gesture recognition technology developed by students and staff a the Advanced Media Lab at NC State University, College of Design, this system utilizes camera recognition, back screen projection and large-scale store-front windows as display screens. Zoom Raleigh represents a new generation in inexpensive human/computer interaction platforms that can be operated in interior/exterior urban environements.

The installation will be available from October 23 through December 31, 2009.
Location: Fayetteville Street and Hargett Street, Raleigh, NC

On July 1, the university rolled out the new North Carolina State University Brand Book.

The book contains standards, guidelines and templates that individuals across campus can use to present the university brand correctly in any form of communication, whether it occurs in print, online or in PowerPoint presentations. The standards established in the NC State Brand Book were developed with the broad involvement of the university community and were created to help bring consistency to the way we all communicate about NC State.

The expectation is not to adjust communications already produced. However, it is expected that during the next 18 months, everyone will work to comply with the standards set forth in the brand book, and to begin that process now with any new work.

Please visit http://www.ncsu.edu/brand to download a copy of the book and to find other resources such as PowerPoint templates and design examples.

A great panel interview with guests:

Monty Montague – Co-founder and Design Principal, BOLT Group
Paul Wetenhall – President, Ben Craig Center Business Incubator, UNC Charlotte
Barbara Spradling – Director, Innovation Institute, McColl Center for Visual Art

The concept of using innovation in business has gained popularity in this difficult economy. Companies are working to “gain a competitive edge” by being more creative and innovative about the products and services they provide.

A few comments on the balance of risk, not too much on accepting the possibility or consequences of failure. They talk a little about the willingness of people/organization to accept change or be comfortable with new innovation/innovative thought – it’s more then just difficult. Good overview of some different strategies at approaching innovation or introducing it to newcomers.

It’s unfortunate to see businesses now “finding” out that design practice is something that can be introduced throughout the process and not just “lipstick on a pig” or to be ascertained only at the tail-end of the process. With the change in climate and the economic pressure it is a good time as any for design to be brought into the forefront to help change what has been longstanding ideology and practice. It’s not a silver bullet for all the problems but it can be a good way to get people and organizations out of their comfort zone and be more forward thinking about their product or industry as well as their customers.

I had a great chuckle when there was this awkward momentary pause as the panel was asked whether it was easier to “teach” an artist/designer about business or a business person about design… coming from both I knew exactly what was mulling in their head.

Designer Profiles + Open Dialogue

Design is everywhere: in your classroom, in your transit from home to school, at the club, at the movies, at the park, in your kitchen, and even on your body. Whether you realize it or not, you are constantly in dialogue with design. You can be literally so at the April 7 Open Dialogue between you and the people on the other end of design.

As our society continually faces new challenges within racial and cultural realms, it is especially necessary and beneficial to have designers who are driven by cultural perspectives and awareness, and who are fluent in the languages (literally and figuratively) of those cultures.

Thus, AADSA is welcoming five (5) local African American designers to discuss their roles and experiences as African American designers, and their design perspectives as they relate to culture.

After each designer provides his/her “profile,” the audience (you) will have the opportunity to converse with and ask questions of the panelists about various aspects of design.
